Major John Edward Richard Bowlby, late the 1st Royal Dragoons, scion of the BLG family of Bowlby of Culverthorpe Hall, formerly of Gilston Park, and grandson maternally of the 11th Viscount Valentia, died at his home, 28 November, 2005. He was aged 91.
He was born 8 May, 1914, the only son of Capt. Geoffrey Vaux Salvin Bowlby (b. 1 Dec, 1883; killed in action 13 May, 1915), Royal Horse Guards, by his wife, the former Hon. Lettice Annesley, CVO (1885-1988), Lady-in-Waiting to HRH The Duchess of York, 1932-36, Woman of the Bedchamber to HM The Queen, 1936-45, Extra Woman of the Bedchamber, 1945-88, daughter of the 11th Viscount Valentia.
He was educated at Eton and Magdalene College, Cambridge.
Career: ->commissioned 2nd lieutenant The Royal Dratgoons, 1936; served in WW2 1939-45, in the Middle East, Sicily and NW Europe; Major, 1943, &c.
He married 23 September, 1950, the Hon. Dorothy Anne, former wife (between 1937 and 1950) of Maj. Robert Alexander Clive Graham (of Graham BLG), and elder daughter of the Hon. Dudley William John North, MC, JP (d. 1936).
His wife was (or is??) co-heiress with her sister, to the abeyant Barony of North, and was granted the title, rank and precedence of a baron's daughter.
There was one daughter of the marriage, Gina Anne (b. 1954). He also leaves a step-daughter, Penelope Virginia (b. 1940); and two granddaughters, Alana and Auriel.
The funeral was held at Mortlake Crematorium, 6 December, 2005.
