Lord Merlyn-Rees, PC

Lord Merlyn-Rees, PC, a life Baron, a former Labour Government Minister, sometime Home Secretary and Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, died in hospital, 5 January, 2006. He was aged 85.

He was born Merlyn Rees, 18 December, 1920, the son of L.D. Rees. He assuemd by deed poll the additional surname of Merlyn before that of Rees, 1992.
He was educated at Elementary Schools in South Wales and Wembley; Harrow Weald Grammar School; London School of Economics; London University; Nottingham University.
Career:-->>served in the RAF 1941-46, was demobilized as a Squadron Leader; Teacher in eonomics and history, Harrow Weald Grammar School, 1949-60; Organised Festival of Labour, 1960-62; Lecturer in Economics, Luton College of Technology, 1962-63; was Labour MP for South Leeds, June, 1963-1983, Lab MP for Morley and Leeds South, 1983-92; Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, 1964; Parliamentary Under Secretary of State Ministry of Defence (Army), 1965-66; Ministry of Defence (RAF), 1966-68; Home Office, 1968-70; Member of the Shadow Cabinet, 1972-74; Opposition Spokesman on Northern Ireland Affairs, 1972-74; Secetary of State for Northern Ireland in the Wilson Administration, 1974-76; Home Secretary in the Callaghan Administration, 1976-79; Shadow Home Secretary, 1979-80; Opposition Spokesman on Energy, 1980-83; Member of the Committee to Examine operation of Section 2 of the Official Secrets Act, 1971; Member of the Committee of the Falklands Inquiry, 1982; President, Video Standards Council, from 1990;President, South Leeds Groundwork Trust from 2001 (Chairman 1987-97); Chancellor, University of Glamorgan, 1994-2001; Hon Fellow, Goldsmiths' College, London University, 1994; Hon LLD Wales 1987, Hon LLD Leeds 1992, &c.
Merlyn Rees was sworn of the Privy Council in 1974.
He was raised to the peerage as a life baron, 1992, taking the title Baron Merlyn-Rees, of Morley and South Leeds in the County of West Yorkshire and of Cilfynydd (his birthplace) in the County of Mid Glamorgan.
He married in 1949, Colleen Faith, daughter of Henry F. Cleveley, of Kenton, Middlesex, by whom he had issue, three sons, Patrick, Gareth and Glyn.
