The 7th Baron Methuen 1931-2014

_. The 7th Baron Methuen (Peerage of the UK, cr 1838), died 9 July, 2014. He was 82.

Robert Alexander Holt Methuen was born 22 July, 1931, a younger son of Anthony Paul Methuen, 5th Baron (1891-1975), by his wife the former Grace Durning Holt (d 1972), and succeeded to the peerage on the death of his elder brother, 24 Aug, 1994.

Lord Methuen was one of the elected hereditayr peers (Lib Dem) and served as a deputy Speaker, House of Lords.

He was twice married, firstly, 10 May, 1958 (div 1993) Mary Catherine Jane Hooper, daughter of the Archdeacon of Ipswich; married 2ndly, 8 Jan, 1994, Magrit Andrea Hadwiger.

Lord Methuen leaves two daughters from his 1st marriage, Charlotte & Henrietta.

The peerage now devolves upon his Lordship's cousin, James Paul Archibald Methuen-Campbell, who was born 25 Oct, 1952.

Sir (William) John Colfox, 2nd Baronet 1924-2014

_. Sir (William) John Colfox, 2nd Baronet (Bart, UK, cr 1939), died 12 July, 2014. He was 90.

He was born 25 Apr, 1924, son of Sir (William) Philip Colfox, MC, 1st Baronet (1888-1966), by his wife the former Mary Frances Symes-Bullen, scion of that landed family, dau of Lt-Col John Symes-Bullen.

He married 13 January, 1962, Frederica Loveday Crutchley, scion of that landed family, only dau of Admiral Sir Victor Crutchley, VC, KCB, DSC, DL, by whom he had issue, two sons and two daughters.

John Colfox succeeded to the baronetcy on his father's demise, 8 Nov, 1966. He in turn is succeeded by his elder son, Philip John, who was born 27 Dec, 1962.

{Jeremy} Ulick Browne, 11th Marquess of Sligo 1939-2014

_. The 11th Marquess of Sligo (Peerage of Ireland, cr 1800), died at his home, Westport House, County Mayo, 13 July, 2014. He was 75.

He was born Jeremy Ulick Browne, 4 June, 1939, son of the 10th Marquess (1908-91), by his wife the former Jose Gauche, dau of William Gauche, and was styled Earl of Altamont from 1952. He succeeded to the peerages on the death of his father, 11 Sept, 1991.

Lord Sligo married 26 Oct, 1961, Jennifer June Lushington Cooper, only dau of Maj George Derek Cooper, MC, by his first wife  the former Pamela Armstrong-Lushington-Tullochj, by whom he had five daughters.

The marquess is succeeded by his cousin, Sebastian Ulick Browne, a great~grandson of the 5th Marquess of Sligo.

North Edward Frederick Dalrymple-Hamilton of Bargany 1922-2014

 North Edward Frederick Dalrymple-Hamilton, of Bargany, CVO, MBE, DL, who died 8 July, 2014, aged 92, was a scion of the Earls of Stair.

He was born 17 February, 1922, the second son of Admiral Sir Frederick Hew George Dalrymple-Hamilton, KCB (1890-1974), and his wife the former Gwendolen Peek ( 1890-1974); and married firstly, 23 July, 1949, the Hon Mary Helen Colville (1922-1981), daughter of the 1st Baron Clydesmuir, GCIE, PC (1894-1954), & his wife the former Agnes Anne Bilsland (1896-1970), scion of the Bilsland baronets; and married 2ndly, 1983, Mrs Geraldine Inez Antoinette Beech (who died 2009), widow of Maj Rowland Beech, and daughter of Maj. Frank Harding. He leaves two sons from his first marriage, North John Frederick (born 7 May, 1950), and James Hew Ronald (born 4 Dec, 1955).

Death of Lady Raglan, wife of the 6th Baron

_. The Baroness Raglan, who died at her home 5 July, 2014, was the wife for 58 years of Geoffrey Somerset, 6th Baron Raglan (born 29 Aug, 1932) (Peerage of the UK, cr 1852).

She was the former Caroline Rachel Hill, the only daughter of Colonel (Edward) Roderick Hill, DSO, and married the then Geoffrey Somerset, 6 Oct, 1956. Her husband, a younger son of the 4th Baron (1885-1964), succeeded to the peerage on the death of his elder brother, 24 January, 2010. 

Lady Raglan is survived by her husband and by 2 daughters, Belinda and Lucy. Her only son, the Hon Arthur Geoffrey Somerset, who was b 27 Apr, 1960, died 25 July, 2012.

A Service of Celebration of her life will be held at St Denys Church, Stanford in the Vale, Oxfordshire, 6 Aug, 2014.

Death of Joan, Baroness Clydesmuir, widow of the 2nd Baron

_. Joan Baroness Clydesmuir, who died 9 July, 2014, at Whim Hall, Lamancha, was the widow of the 2nd Baron Clydesmuir, KT, CB, MBE (1917-96) (Peerage of the Uk, cr 1948).

She was the former Joan Marguerita Booth, 1st daughter of Lieutenant-Col Ernest Brabazon Booth, DSO, of Darver Castle, co Louth, and married the then Ronald John Bilsland Colville, 10 Apr, 1946. Her husband succeeded his father as 2nd Baron Clydesmuir, 31 Oct, 1954, and died 2 Oct, 1996.

Lady Clydesmuir leaves issue, 2 sons. The elder son, David (b 8 Apr, 1949) os 3rd holder of the peerage.

A Thanksgiving Service will be held at Biggar Kirk, Friday 18 July, 2014.

Capt North Edward Frederick Dalrymple Hamilton of Bargany, CVO, MBE, DSC 1921-2014

__.Capt North Edward Frederick Dalrymple Hamilton, CVO, MBE, DSC, who died suddenly at Ayr, 8 July, 2014, aged 92, was a scion of the Earls of Stair (Earl, cr 1703). Capt Dalrymple Hamilton, of Bargany, Girvan, Ayrshire, a close friend of HM The Queen, was executive officer, Royal Yacht Britannia 1958-60, 

He was born 17 Feb, 1922, a godson of the then Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII and Duke of Windsor), son of Admiral Sir Frederick Dalrymple Hamilton, KCB 1890-1974, by his wife Gwendolen (d 1974), dau of Sir Cuthbert Peek, 2nd Baronet. A sister, Graeme Elizabeth, born in 1926, was a goddaughter of the then Duchess of York (afterwards Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother) &c.

He married 1stly, 23 July, 1949, the Hon Mary Helen Colville (d 1981), daughter of the 1st Baron Clydesmuir, PC, GCIE, by whom he had issue; married 2ndly, 1983, Geraldine Inez Antoinette, widow of Maj Rowland Beech, MC, and dau of Maj Frank Harding.

He leaves two sons from his 1st marriage, North John Frederick, who served as a Page of Honour to the Queen Mother 1964-66, and James Hew Ronald.

Baroness Farnham 1939-2014

__. The Baroness Farnham, who died at her home, 3 July, 2014, was the wife of Simon, 13th Baron Farnham (Barony in the Peerage of Ireland, cr 1756).

She was the former Karol Anne Prior-Palmer, a dau of Maj~Gen George Erroll Prior-Palmer, CB, DSO, of Appleshaw House., Andover, Hampshire, and married Simon Kenlis Maxwell in 1964. Her husband succeeded his elder brother as thirteen baron, 22 March, 2001.

Lady Farnham is survived by her husband, two sons, and one daughter.

___. Louisa Cheape (nee Blair), wife of Henry Bruce Iain Ismay Cheape (b 1980), the 8th head of the gentry family of Strathtyrum and heir to his father as 3rd of Fossoway, gave birth to a son, John. 5 July, 2014.

Henry Cheape is the son of Angus Geoffrey Bruce Ismay Cheape, late the Scots Guards, of Kinross, by his former wife the former Emma Margaret Tennant (b 1954 now Lady Stevens, wife of Sir Jocelyn Stevens, Knt), scion of the Barons Glenconner, & Louisa Cheape is a daughter of Mr & Mrs Hew Blair, of Earlston, Berwickshire.

Mary Duchess of Roxburghe 1915-2014

Mary, Duchess of Roxburghe, who died 2 July, 2014, aged 99, was the first wife of the late George, 9th Duke of Roxburghe (1913-74), and was a scion of the extinct Marquesses of Crewe.

The Duchess was a patron of the Royal Ballet.

She was born Lady Mary Evelyn Crewe-Milnes (23 March, 1915), youngest daughter of the 1st Marquess of Crewe, KG, PC (1858-1945), by his second wife, the former Lady Margaret Primrose (1881-1967), daughter of the 5th Earl of Rosebery.

She married 24 Oct, 1935 (div 1953), the 9th Duke of Roxburghe. No issue. The Duchess held the Queen's canopy at the Coronation of King George VI, 12 May, 1937, and must be one of the last surviving of those in Westmister Abbey on that day.

_. Sonja, Baroness Hollenden, who died 24 June, 2014, aged 95, was the widow of Gordon Hope-Morley, 3rd Baron Hollenden (1914-99) (Peerage of the UK, cr 1912).

She was the former Sonja Sundt, daughter of Thorlf Sundt, of Bergen, Norway, and married Gordon Hope-Morley, 27 Oct, 1945. Her husband succeeded as 3rd Baron on the death of his uncle in Oct 1977, and he died 12 April, 1999. The couple had three sons, Ian,now 4th holder of the barony, Robin (deceased) and Andrew.

_. Christopher Gordon Edward Stopford, who died 23 June, 2014, aged 60, was a scion of the Earls of Courtown (Earl, Ireland, cr 1762), a grandson of the 7th Earl (1877-1957)

He was born 18 Dec, 1953, second son of the Hon Edward Richard Barrington Stopford (1914-90), by his wife the former Ann Marie Elizabeth Douglas Henderson, dau of Brig. Harold Henderson, CBE.

Mr Stopford, who was unm, is survived by a brother, Michael, and a sister, Penelope.

 Jemima Alice Charlotte Hannon (nee Ensor, born Aug 1982), wife of Richard Michael Hannon Jr (born 24 September, 1975), gave birth to a son, Jack Richard H. Hannon, in 2014, a brother for Eliza Scarlet (born in 2012).

Richard, the racehorse trainer, is a son of Richard Michael Hannon Snr (born 1945), the racehorse trainer, of Everleigh, Wiltshire, by his wife Josephine.

Jemima Hannon is a daughter of Peter Richard Ensor (born 1948), of Marlborough, Wiltshire, and his wife the former Hon Sarah Campbell (born 1950), daughter of the life peer the Baron Campbell of Alloway, ERD, QC (1917-2013), and his first wife the former Diana Watson-Smyth.

. Sir Michael Arthur John Oakshott, 3rd Baronet ( Bt, UK, cr 1959), died 20 June, 2014. He was 82.

He was born 12 Apr, 1932, second son of Hendrie Oakshott, MBE (1904-75), Conservative MP for Bebington 1950-64, who was created a baronet in 1957, and a life peer as Baron Oakshott in 1964.

Married 1957, Christina Rose Methuen Banks, by whom he had issue, three sons, Thomas, Charles and Angus.

Michael Oakshott succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of his elder brother, Sir Anthony Hendrie Oakshott, 2nd Bt, 11 Dec, 2002.

The title now passes to the elder son, Thomas Hendrie Oakshott, who was born 12 June, 1959.

The funeral is at Roucan Loch Crematorium, Dumfries, Thurs 26 June.

The baronetcy now passes to his younger brother, John Miles (b 18 July, 1929), who married 1960, Countess Victoria zu Castell-Rudenhausen, descended from the Royal House of Saxe~Coburg & Gotha, and kin of HM The Queen, &c.

Mrs Pandora Delevingne is a daughter of Sir Jocelyn Edward Greville Stevens, Knt, CVO, the publisher, by his 1st wife the former Jane Armyne Sheffield, LVO, sometime Lady-in-Waiting to HRH The Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, and scion of the Sheffield Baronets (cr. 1755).

Hon Nicholas Makeig Lyttelton 1951-2014

_.The Hon Nicholas Makeig Lyttelton, who died 10 June, 2014, after a long illness, was the 4th son of the 10th Viscount Cobham (1909-77) (Peerage of GB, cr 1718), by  his wife the former Elizabeth Alison Makeig-Jones (d 1986); and was a yr brother of the 11th and 12th viscounts.

The 28th Baron Dacre 1952-2014

_.The Baron Dacre, who  died 8 May, 2014, aged 61, was the 28th holder of the peerage created by writ of  summons in 1321.

Lord Dacre, who lived near Alresford, Hampshire, was a son of the playwright William Douglas-Home, and a nephew of the Prime Minister, Sir Alec Douglas-Home.

He was born 16 May, 1952, only son of the Hon William Douglas-Home (1912-92), by his wife the former Hon Rachel Leila Brand (1929-2012), a peeress in  her own right as 27th Baroness Dacre.

He succeeded to the barony on his mother's death, 25 Dec 2012.

He married in 1979, Christine Stephenson (d 18 May, 2008), dau of William Stephenson, of Royston, Hertfordshire, by whom he had an only child, a daughter, Emily Douglas-Home, who was born 7 Feb, 1983, and now inherits the ancient peerage.

Bessie Dixon 1922-2014

_. Bessie Dixon (nee Braithwaite), died at Harrogate 22 May, 2014, aged 91.

She was born 4 June, 1922, eldest daughter of Albert Braithwaite, of Colne, Lancashire, by his wife the former Nora Birch.

She married at Colne, 27 Sept, 1952, Frank Dixon (b 15 Sept, 1927), son of Thomas Dixon,of Colne, by his wife the former Mary Jobling.

Mrs Dixon, late of Chillandham Cross, Martyr Worthy, Winchester, Hampshire, and latterly of Hampden House, Duchy Rd, Harrogate, was widowed 3 Aug, 2002.

She was survived by her sons, Andrew & Graham, and daughter, Alison. The funeral took place at Stonefall Crematorium, Harrogate, 4 June, 2014, the 92nd anniversary of her birth.

She married 7 July, 1950, Maj William Birkbeck, DL, Coldstream Guards (b  13  Apr 1922-   ), of Bainton House, Stamford, Lincs, scion of that landed gentry family, third son of Maj Henry Birkbeck (1885-1956), by his wife the former Sybil Harley (d 1948), scion of that landed family, by whom she had issue, Anthony, Victoria, Priscilla and Rosetta.

Sybil Lady Wrey (c1922-2014)

_. Sybil Lady Wrey, who died 29 April, 2014, aged 90, was the widow of Sir (Castel Richard) Bourchier Wrey, 14th Baronet (1903-91) (Bt, England, cr 1628).

She was the former Sybil Mabel Alice Lubke, dau of Dr George Lubke, of Durban, South Africa, and married Bourchier Wrey, 15 March, 1947. She was widowed in 1991, and leaves a son, Sir George, the 15th Baronet (b 1948). Another son(Edward) Sherard Wrey died in 2007.

Cremation in Durban, South Africa. A Memorial Service is to take place at Tawstock, Devon at a later date.

_. Sir John Best-Shaw, 10th Baronet died 22 April, 2014. He was 89.

He was born 28 Sept, 1924, son of Commander Sir John Best-Shaw 9th Baronet (1895-1984), by his wife the former Elizabeth Mary Theodora Hughes, daughter of Sir Robert Hughes, 12th Baronet. He succeeded to the baronetcy (Bt, England, cr 1665) on his father's demise in 1984.

He married 13 Feb, 1960, Jane Gordon Guthrie, by whom he had issue, three sons (1 deceased), Thomas and Samuel, and a daughter, Lucy.

The baronetcy now passes to his eldest surv son, Thomas, who was born 7 March, 1965.

Thanksgiving Service to take place 20 June, 2014, at St Mary's Church, West Malling.
