She married in 1949, the Hon Miles Fitzalan Howard, eldest son of the 3rd Baron Howard of Glossop by his wife the Baroness Beaumont, who held the peerage in her own right. Her husband succeeded his mother as 12th Baron Beaumont in 1971, and his father as 4th Baron Howard of Glossop in 1972, and his kinsman as 17th Duke of Norfolk in 1975. He died 24 June, 2002. The duchess leaves 2 sons, Edward, the 18th Duke of Norfolk and Lord Gerald Fitzalan Howard, and three daughters, the Countess of Balfour, the actress Marsha Fitzalan and Lady Carina, wife of Sir David Frost. -=-

._ Lady Rashleigh, who died at her home, 30 March, 2013, was chatelaine of Menabilly, Cornwall, the Georgian house from which Daphne Du Maurier drew her 'Manderley' in her classic novel 'Rebecca'.

Lady Rashleigh was the wife of Sir Richard Harry Rashleigh, 6th Baronet (b 8 Jul 1958), (Bart, UK, cr 1831), of Menabilly, Parr, Cornwall.

Lady Rashleigh was born Emma Felicity Clare McGougan, the elder daughter of the late John McGougan, of London, by his former wife the former Jennifer Dyke (who married 2ndly, 1987, Sir Antony Arthur Acland, KG, GCMG, GCVO (scion of the Acland Baronets, cr UK, 1890).

She is survived by her husband and two children.

She was born 5 July, 1920, as Lady Diana Mary Pelham, elder daughter of the 5th Earl of Yarborough (who was 14th Baron Conyers and 7th Baron Fauconberg), by his wife the former Nancy Brocklehurst(d 1977). On her father's demise, 7 Feb, 1948, his baronies fell into abeyance between his two daughters, and the abeyance terminated, 17 May, 2012, with the death of the younger daughter, Lady June Wendy Lycett. Lady Diana married 15 Nov, 1952, Robert Miller, of Harare, Zimbabwe, who died in 1990. Lady Fauconberg & Conyers had two daughters, the Hon Marcia Anne MILLER, renamed on adoption as Anthea Theresa LYCETT (b 21 June 1954). She was adopted by her mother's sister. She is unm and lives in Gloucestershire, and the Hon Beatrix Diana MILLER (b 23 Aug 1955). She m 1991 Simon William JONES ARMSTRONG (d 2012) and has two sons: Guy William Robert (b 1996) and Matthew Charles (b 1998). They live in Kenya. _.The Lord Thurlow, KCMG, the 8th Baron, who died 24 March, 2013, at the age of 101, served as British High Commissioner in New Zealand and Nigeria, and retired after three years as Governor of the Bahamas in 1972.

Francis Edward Hovell-Thurlow-Cumming-Bruce was born 9 March, 1912, a younger son of Rev. the 6th Baron Thurlow (1869-1952), by his wife the former Grace Catherine Trotter (died 1959), and succeeded to the peerage (Baron, GB, cr 1792), on his elder brother's demise, 29 May, 1971.

Married 11 May, 1949, Yvonne Diana Wilson (who d. 14 Feb, 1990), by whom he had issue, two sons and 2 daughters. He was predeceased by his younger son, Peter, who died in 1985. The peerage now devolves upon his Lordship's only surviving son, the Hon Roualeyn Robert Hovell-Thurlow-Cumming-Bruce, who was born 13 Apr, 1952.

He is survived by his third wife and by 2 daughters of the first marriage, Samantha (b 1962) and Georgina (b 1963).

The funeral is at Ampney Crucis Church, Gloucestershire, 21 March.

_.Lord Sandys, the 7th Baron, sometime Deputy Chief Whip in the House of Lords (Captain of the Yeoman of the Guard) in the administration of Margaret Thatcher, died at his home, 11 February, 2013. He was 81.

Richard Michael Oliver Hill was born 21 July, 1931, descends from Mary Sandys, wife of the 2nd Marquess of Downshire, who was raised to the peerage of the UK in 1802, as Baroness Sandys, with a special remainder allowing the title to pass, on her demise, to her second son.

Lord Sandys was a son of Arthur, 6th Baron (1876-1961), by his wife (and 3rd cousin) the former Cynthia Trench-Gascoigne (d 1990), and he succeeded to the peerage on his father's death, 24 Nov, 1961.

Lord Sandys was appointed a Lord in Waiting in 1974, was a Tory Whip in the Upper House 1974-9, then Deputy Chief Whip and Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard, 1979-83.

He married in 1961, Patricia Simpson Hall, daughter of  Capt Lionel Hall, of Lower Beeding, Sussex. There were no children of the union. The barony now devolves, under the terms of the special remainder, upon his distant cousin, the 9th Marquess of Downshire (who was born 4 Feb, 1959).

Baroness Rix 1929-2013

_.The Baroness Rix (the actress Elspet Gray), died 18 February, 2013. She was 83.

Lady Rix, a charity campaigner for many years, appeared in the TV shows Blackadder, Fawlty Towers, Dr Who, &c, and made a fine partnership with her husband Brian in the famed Whitehall farces.

She was born 12 April, 1929, as Elspet MacGregor-Gray, daughter of James MacGregor-Gray, of Surrey, and married in 1949, the actor Brian Rix, CBE, who was created a life peer in 1992, as Baron Rix, of Whitehall in the City of Westminster. She was the mother of 2 sons, James and Jonathan, and 2 daughters, Shelley and Louisa. Her elder daughter predeceased her in 2005.

Lady Laura is the elder daughter of the 9th Earl of Arran, of Castle Hill, Devon, by his wife the Countess of Arran (the former Eleanor van Cutsem). Major James Duckworth-Chad is a second cousin of the Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry of Wales.

He was born 15 July, 1944, son of Sir John Edward Gilmour, 3rd Baronet (1912-2007), by his wife the former Ursula Mabyn Wills, and succeeded to the baronetcy on his father's death, 1 June, 2007. He married in 1967, Valerie Jardine Russell, daughter of George Walker Russell, by whom he had issue, 2 sons and 2 daughters. The baronetcy is now inherited by his elder son, (John) Nicholas Gilmour, who was born in 1970.

The Hon Sarah Katherine Elinor Norton was born  20 January, 1920, daughter of Richard Henry Brinsley Norton, 6th Baron Grantley (1892-1954), of Markenfield Hall, Ripon, North Yorkshire, by his wife the former Jean Mary Kinloch, scion of the Kinloch Baronets.

She married 1stly, 14 June, 1945 (div 1953), the Hon William Waldorf Astor (1907-66), eldest son of the 2nd Viscount Astor (1879-1952), of Cliveden, by his wife the former Nancy Langhorne.

Her first husband succeeded his father as 3rd Viscount, 30 Sept, 1952, and they divorced the following year. She married 2ndly, 17 Apr 1953 (div 1965), as his 1st wife, Lt-Col Thomas Michael Baring, scion of the Barons Northbrook (Peerage of the UK, cr 1866). She is survived by a son from the first marriage, William Waldorf Astor, 4th Viscount (born 27 Dec 1951), and by an adopted son, Edward, from the second marriage.

_. Peter John Philip Seely, 5th Baron Mottistone (Peerage of the UK, cr 1933), died in Kent, 23 January, 2013, aged 63.

He was born 29 Oct, 1949, son of David Peter Seely, 4th Baron Mottistone, CBE (1920-2011), by his wife the former Anthea Christine McMullan. Succeeded to the peerage on his father's death, 24 Nov, 2011.

He married twice, firstly, in 1972 (div 1975) Joyce Cairns, and secondly, 1982 (div 2001), Linda Swain. He leaves a son from the first marriage, and a son, and three daughters from the second marriage.

The peerage now devolves upon his elder son, the Hon Christopher David Peter Seely, who was born 1 Oct, 1974.

The funeral takes place at the Church of St Peter, Hever, Kent, 12 Feb.
