Katherine Viscountess Macmillan of Ovenden, DBE (1921-2017)

_. Katherine Viscountess Macmillan of Ovenden, DBE, who died 22 January, 2017, aged 96, was the daughter-in-law of one Prime Minister and the great-granddaughter of another.

Lady Macmillan was the daughter-in-law of Prime Minister Harold Macmillan [1st Earl of Stockton, cr 1984] & was a scion of the Barons Harlech [cr UK, 1876].

She was born Katherine Margaret Alice Ormsby-Gore, in 1921, a daughter of the 4th Baron Harlech, KG, GCMG, PC (1885-1964), by his wife the former Lady Beatrice Edith Mildred Gascoyne-Cecil, DCVO, daughter of the 4th Marquess of Salisbury, who was son of Queen Victoria's last PM, the 3rd Marquess, &c.

Katherine married in 1942, Maurice Victor Macmillan, son of Harold Macmillan. Her husband, a Conservative MP & government minister, received the courtesy title Viscount Macmillan of Ovenden in 1984 when his father, aged 90, was ennobled with the Earldom of Stockton. Maurice Macmillan died shortly afterwards, two years before the passing of the 1st Earl of Stockton.

Viscountess Macmillan leaves two sons, Alexander, 2ho succeeded his grandfather as 2nd Earl of Stockton, and the Hon David Macmillan, & was predeceased by two sons, Joshua and Adam, and by a daughter, Rachel.

The funeral is to take place at St Gabriel's, Warwick Sq, London SW1, on Thurs 9 Feb, 2017.

Sir John Oakeley, 8th Baronet (1932-2016)

_. Sir John Oakeley, 8th Baronet, holder of 24 World, European & National Sailing titles, died 19 Dec, 2016. He was 84.

John Digby Atholl Oakeley was born 27 Nov, 1932, and succeeded his father Sir [Edward] Atholl Oakeley, 7th Bt, in 1987. He married in 1958, Maureen Frances, dau of John Cox, of Hamble, Hampshire, by whom he had issue.

Sir John is succeeded in the baronetcy [cr GB, 1790] by his son, Robert John Atholl Oakeley, who was born 13 Aug, 1963.

Sir Christopher Bland (1938-2017)

_. Sir Christopher Bland, who died 28 January, 2017, aged 78, was the novelist & former British Telecom  and BBC chairman, a kinsman of Dorothea Jordon (nee Bland) mistress of King William IV and mother of the monarch's ten illegitimate offspring.

He was born 29 May, 1938, son of James Franklin MacMahon Bland, and was educated at Sedbergh; married 1981, Jennifer Mary, Viscountess Enfield [ex wife of Thomas Byng, styled Viscount Enfield] [later 8th Earl of Strafford] daughter of the Rt Hon William May, MP, of Mertoun Hall, Hollywood, Co Down, by whom he had issue, a son, Archie, a journalist on the Guardian newspaper.

Alexander Chancellor,CBE 1940-2017

_Alexander Chancellor, CBE, who died 28 January, 2017, aged 77, was editor of The Spectator 1975-84 and The Oldie 2014-17, and was descended from the Paget baronets [Cr UK 1896].

Alexander Surtees Chancellor was born 4 Jan, 1940, son of Sir Christopher Chancellor by his wife the former Sylvia Paget, daughter of Sir Richard Paget, Bt, a Somerset landowner.

He married in 1964, Susanna Elizabeth Debenham (b 1943), scion of the Debenham baronets [Bt, UK, cr 1931], by whom he had issue, two daughters. He also leaves a daughter from his relationship with Emily Bearn.

James Edward Shelley, CBE (1932-2017)

_. James Edward Shelley, CBE, who died 18 January, 2017, aged 84, was a scion of the Shelley baronets (Baronet, England, cr by James I in 1611).

He was born in 1932, son of Vice-Admiral Richard Benyon, CB, CBE (1892-1968) (who had assumed the surname of Benyon in lieu of Shelley in 1967), by his wife the former Eve Alice Cecil, a descendant of the Marquesses of Salisbury.

Married in 1956, Judith Grubb, by whom he had issue.

The funeral is at Chris Church, Ramsdell, Friday 10 Feb, 2017.

Tam Dalyell (1932-2017)

_. Tam Dalyell, who died 26 January, 2017, aged 84, was a tenacious Labour MP known for the 'West Lothian question' - who was Sir Thomas Dalyell of the Binns, 11th Baronet {but did not use the title}.

He was born 9 Aug 1932, son of Lt-Col Gordon Loch, CIE, DL, JP, by his wife (Dame) Eleanor Isobel Dalyell of the Binns (de jure Baronetess). His parents assumed the surname & arms of Dalyell of The Binns (officially recognised by the Lord Lyon King of Arms); he succeeded his mother as 11th baronet upon her death in 1972 and in 1973 he successfully established his claim to the baronetcy but decided not to use the title.

He was elected Labour MP for West Lothian in 1962; became Father of the House of Commons in 2001; he left the Commons at the General Election in 2015, &c.

Tam Dalyell married in 1963, the Hon Kathleen Mary Agnes Wheatley, daughter of the life peer Baron Wheatley, by whom he had issue. He is succeeded in the baronetcy by his only son, Gordon Wheatley Dalyell, who was born 26 September, 1965.

Cordelia Margot D'Oyly Acloque (b 2017)

_. Keziah Acloque (nee Kelsey), wife of Alexander John Sebastian Acloque (born 1978), descended from the Barons Howard De Walden (Peerage of England, cr 1597), gave birth to a daughter, Cordelia Margot D'Oyly, 16 January, 2017, a sister for Jasper Guy D'Oyly, who was b 27 April, 2013.

Alexander Acloque is the only son of the late Guy Acloque by his wife the former Camilla Anne Bronwen Scott-Ellis (b 1 Apr 1947), now of Alderley, Gloucestershire, fourth daughter of the late John Osmael Scott-Ellis, 9th Baron Howard de Walden (1912-99), by his 1st wife the former Countess Irene Harrach (d 1975).

Kezia Acloque is a daughter of Mr Alan Kelsey, of London, and Mrs Sarah Kelsey, of Chelsworth, Suffolk.

Dowager Marchioness of Anglesey, DBE (d 2017)

_. The Dowager Marchioness of Anglesey, DBE, LVO, who died 21 January, 2017,aged 92, was for over 60 years the chatelaine of Plas-Newydd, Anglesey, the Paget family seat. She was the widow of the 7th Marquess.

She was born Elizabeth Shirley Vaughan Morgan, daughter of Charles Langbridge Morgan, of London, by his wife the former Hilda Vaughan; married 16 Oct, 1948, George Henry Victor Paget, 7th Marquess of Anglesey (1922-2013), who had inherited the family honours a year earlier. Her husband, who was Lord Lieutenant of Gwynedd, 1983-89, died 13 July, 2013.

Lady Anglesey leaves two sons, the 8th Marquess of Anglesey, and Lord Rupert Paget, & three daughters, Lady Henrietta Megarry, Lady Sophia Keir, and Lady Amelia Singleton.

The private funeral is to take place at St Edwen's Church, Llanedwen, Anglesey.

_. Thomas Barrington Cubitt, who died 19 January, 2017, aged 87, was a scion of the Cubitt landed family [from whom descend the Barons Ashcombe & HRH The Duchess of Cornwall] . He was late the Grenadier Guards [Capt].

He was born 6 Sept, 1929, son of Maj Charles Cyril Cubitt, by his wife the former Gladys Louisa Violet Crake; married 24 Sept, 1959 [div 1985] Jennifer Margaret Chaytor, scion of the Chaytor baronets, by whom he had issue.

Michael Roland Jackson was born 20 Apr, 1919, succeeded his father Sir [Walter David] Russell Jackson, in 1956; married 1stly, 1942 (div 1969) [Hilda] Margaret Richardson; married 2ndly, 1969, Hazel Mary Edwards, and had issue from his first marriage.

_. The Hon Emma Tennant, who died 20 January, 2017, aged 79, was much married novelist and scion of the Barons Glenconner.

She was born 20 Oct, 1937, as the Hon Emma Christina Tennant, daughter of the 2nd Baron Glenconner (1899-1983), by his second wife the former Elizabeth Powell.

She married firstly, 1957 (div 1962), Sebastian Yorke, scion of the Earls of Hardwicke; married secondly, 1963 (div) Christopher John Penrice Booker, author and journalist; married thirdly, 1968 (div 1973), Alexander Claud Cockburn, descended from the Arbuthnot baronets; married fourthly, 2008, Tim Owens, writer.

Emma Tennant leaves a son from her first marriage, the author Matthew Yorke, a daughter, Daisy, from her third marriage, and a daughter, Rose, from her relationship with the publisher Michael Demspey.

1st Earl of Snowdon, GCVO 1930-2017

_. The 1st Earl of Snowdon, GCVO, society photographer and sometime brother-in-law of Her Majesty The Queen, died 13 January, 2017. He was 86.

Antony Charles Robert Armstrong-Jones was born 7 March, 1930, son of Ronald Owen Lloyd Armstrong-Jones, MBE (d 1966), by his first wife, the former Anne Messel (d 1992) (later Countess of Rosse).

He married 1stly, at Westminster Abbey, 6 May, 1960 (div 1978), HRH The Princess Margaret Rose (1930-2002), younger daughter of His Majesty King George VI and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth; married 2ndly, 15 Dec, 1978 (div 1999), Mrs Lucy Mary Lindsay-Hogg (b 1941), dau of Donald Brooks Davies.

Lord Snowdon leaves two children from his marriage to Princess Margaret, David, Viscount Linley (b 1961), who succeeds as 2nd Earl of Snowdon, and a daughter, Lady Sarah Chatto(b 1964). He also leaves a daughter, Lady Frances von Hofmannsthal (b 1979), from his second marriage. Lord Snowdon also leaves several illegitimate children from several encounters.

He was Constable & Gov of Carnarvon Castle, and appointed GCVO in 1969 after the investiture of the Prince of Wales.

Lord Snowdon, in 1999, was created a life peer as Baron Armstrong-Jones, of Nymans in the County of West Sussex.

A service of Thanksgiving for the life of the Earl of Snowdon is to take place at St Margaret's Church, Westminster Abbey, Friday 7 April, 2017.

3rd Baron Lyell, DL 1939-2017

_. The 3rd Baron Lyell, DL, died at Dundee, 11 January, 2017. He was 77.

Lord Lyell was Opposition Whip, House of Lords 1975-79; Lord-in-Waiting (Government Whip) 1979-84; Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Northern Ireland 1984-89; elected hereditary peer (Deputy Speaker - Conservative), House of Lords 1999.

He was born 27 March, 1939, son of the 2nd Baron Lyell, VC (1913-43), by his wife the former Sophie Mary Trafford (1916-2012), and succeeded his father, who was killed in action 27 Apr, 1943 (VC posthumously).

Lord Lyell was unmarried and the peerage now becomes extinct.

John Ralph Stourton (1930-2017)

_.John Ralph Stourton, who died 5 January, 2017, aged 86, was a scion of the Barons Mowbray, Segrave & Stourton, and a cousin of England's Premier Baron.

Mr Stourton's sister Mary married the 5th Earl of Gainsborough, and another sister, Monica, married Henry Greig, son of King George VI's aide, Sir Louis Greig.

He was born 25 March, 1930, second son of the Hon John Joseph Stourton (1899-1992), by his first wife the former Kathleen Alice Gunther; educated at Eton; Lieut, Grenadier Guards; Director, Liebig's Extract of Meat Co 1957-68, Brooke Bond Liebig 1968-74, Interocean Shipping Agency 1974-92, &c.

He married (1) 11 Dec, 1958 (div 1965) Virginia Hordern; married (2) 26 July, 1967, Caroline Honor O'Dwyer, and leaves issue, a daughter from the first marriage, & a daughter from the second marriage.

A Service of Thanksgiving is to be held at Christ Church, East Stour, Gillingham, Dorset, 28 January, 2017.

Lady Anne-Louise Mary Hamilton-Dalrymple (1932-2017

_. The Lady Anne-Louise Hamilton-Dalrymple, who died at her home, at Leuchie, North Berwick, East Lothian, 7 January, 2017, aged 84, was the wife of  Sir Hew Fleetwood Hamilton-Dalrymple, GCVO, 10th Baronet (b 9 Apr 1926), and was a scion of the Earls of Albemarle.

She was born Lady Anne-Louise Mary Keppel, 17 March, 1932, the only child by his second wife of the 9th Earl of Albemarle (1882-1979), by his 2nd wife the former Diana Cicely Grove (Countess of Albemarle, DBE); married 25 Sept, 1954, Maj Hew Fleetwood Hamilton-Dalrymple, who succeeded his father in 1959 as the 10th baronet.

Lady Anne-Louise leaves issue, three sons, Hew (b 1955), the Rev John (b 1957), and William (b 1965).

_. Ralph Newman Gilbey, who died at Yeovil, 22 December, 2016, aged 91, was a scion of the Gilbey baronets, and father of James Gilbey, Princess Diana's "Squidgy".

He was born 2 March, 1925, second son Francis Newman Gilbey, OBE, by his wife the former Mary Jump; married 10 Oct, 1949, Barbara Scott, by whom he had issue, three sons, Thomas, Francis and James, and a daughter, Helen.

The funeral ~ a double funeral with that of his son Francis who survived him by only a week ~ is to take place at the Church of St Luke & St Teresa, Wincanton ~ on 16 January, 2017.

Francis Newman Gilbey (1953-2016)

_.Francis Newman Gilbey, who died at Yeovil, 29 Dec, 2016, aged 63, was a scion of the Gilbey baronets, and a brother of James Gilbey -- Princess Diana's "Squidgy".

He was born 12 May, 1953, second son of Ralph Newman Gilbey (1925-2016), by his wife the former Barbara Scott. Unm. He died a week after his own father's demise.

The funeral takes place at the Church of St Luke & St Teresa, Wincanton, 16 January, 2017.

Patricia Lady Ropner (d 2016)

_. Patricia Lady Ropner, who died 28 November, 2016, was the widow of Sir Robert Ropner, 4th Baronet.

She was the former Patricia Kathleen Schofield, daughter of William Edward Schofield, of West Malling, Kent, and married Robert Ropner in 1943. He succeeded his father as 4th baronet in 1962, and died 12 January, 2004.

Lady Ropner leaves a son, Sir Robert, the 5th baronet, and a daughter, Serena.

Colonel Henry Owen Hugh Smith 1937-2016

_. Colonel Henry Owen Hugh Smith, The Blues & Royals, who died 1 December, 2016, aged 79, was a distant cousin of HM The Queen, and a scion of the Smith landed family, formerly of Midhurst.

He was born 19 June, 1937, the second son of Lt-Cdr Colin Edward Smith, RN, by his wife the former Hon Elizabeth Dulcie Hotham, a sister of the 7th Baron Hotham, and had siblings, Andrew (b 1931), and Sarah (b 1932). He was educated at Ampleforth. Unm.

Christopher John Reith 1928-2016

__. Mr Christopher John Reith, who died 23 October, 2016, aged 88, was the son of Lord Reith, first Director General of the BBC, & he disclaimed this barony for life on his father's demise.

Christopher John Reith was born 27 May, 1928, son of then then John Reith by his wife the former Muriel Katharine Odhams. His father was created a Baron of the UK in 1940, and died 16 June, 1971.

Christopher Reith disclaimed the barony of Reith for life, 21 April, 1972. He married in 1969, {Penelope} Margaret Ann, elder dau of the late Henry Rowland Morris, of Beeston, Nottinghamshire, by whom he had issue, a son James, and a daughter, Julie. The son, born 2 June, 1971, succeeds as 3rd Baron Reith.

She was d of Lt-Col Philip EUSTACE SMITH MC (1889-1935) of Rothley Crag, Cambo, Northumberland, and Eleanor CLAYTON (1887-?). She m 1946, as his 2nd w, Maj 8th Duke of LEINSTER (1914-2004) and had two sons including the present 9th Duke of Leinster. Her 2nd son, Lord John FitzGERALD, d in 2015, and it's his only son Edward (b 1988 and unm) who is hp to his uncle. Others in line to the dukedom are:

Born 15th July 1922: died 12th December 2016. The funeral will take place at midday on Saturday, 17th December at Hatfield Parish Church. There will be no memorial service. She was d of Capt Hon Valentine Maurice WYNDHAM-QUIN (1890-1983), scion of the DUNRAVEN and MAYO earls, and Marjorie Elizabeth PRETYMAN (1897-1969), scion of the BRADFORD & SCARBROUGH earls, etc etc. She me 1945 the 6th Marquess of SALISBURY and had six sons and a dau.

Lady Elizabeth Longman 1924-2016

Dearly loved mother of Caroline, Jane and Emma, grandmother and great-grandmother. Funeral at St John's Church, Bishopstone, near Salisbury SP5 4AS at 12 noon on Tuesday 20th December. No flowers. She was d of 10th Earl of CAVAN and (1865-1946) and his 2nd w Lady (Hester) Joan BYNG (d 1927) d of 5th Earl of STRAFFORD and Emily Georgina KERR (d 1929, 1st d of Adm Lord Frederick KERR). She m 1949  her 1st cousin once removed, Mark Frederick Kerr (1916-72), s of Lt-Col Henry Kerr LONGMAN DSO MC (1881-1958) and Mary Frances (d 1941) 4th d of Admiral Lord Frederick Herbert KERR (1818-96, s of 6th Marquess of LOTHIAN and his w a gd of 3rd Duke of BUCCLEUCH &c &c), and _ RUSSELL, and had three daus. Her grandchildren include the Marchioness of CHOLMONDELEY (b 1984) and the Countess of DURHAM (b 1982).

Queen MARY and The Princess ROYAL, Countess of HAREWOOD were godparents and she was a bridesmaid at the wedding of The QUEEN (who is godmother to Lady Elizabeth's eldest dau). As was Hon Mary Rhodes, news of whose death we posted recently.

3rd Baron Pender (d 2016)

The 3rd Baron Pender (John Willoughby Denison-Pender) died on Dec. 17, 2016. He is succeeded by his son Henry John Richard (b. 1968).

 

Sir John Oakeley, 8th Baronet (d 2016)

An International yachtsman who represented GB in the Mexico '68 and Munich '72 Olympics; world champion in a multitude of dinghies and keelboats during his long and successful career. _. Charles Belloc Lowndes, who died tragically, 20 Dec, 2016, aged 49, was a scion of that landed family, son of Richard Belloc Lowndes by his wife the former Charlotte Anne Formby, father for Kiki and Hen. Former husband of Portia.

He was brother of Camilla, Jamie, Justin, Adrian and Arabella. His mother later wed Timothy Seymour Bathurst, son of Group Capt Peter Bathurst and the former Lady Elizabeth Gore-Langton, scion of the Earls Temple of Stowe, &c.

She was the former Grace Maria Kolin, dau of Dr Michael Kolin, of Dubrovnik, and married (1) Prince Stanislas Radziwill, and (2), 17 July, 1961, as his third wife, Eric, Earl of Dudley, a great friend of King Edward VIII (Duke of Windsor). Her 2nd husband died 26 Dec, 1969.

Lady Dudley leaves a son from her first marriage, Prince John Radziwill.

The funeral takes place at the Church of Sacre-Coeur in Ouchy, Lausanne, on Wednesday 4 January, 2017.

__. Victoria Cornwall Legh (nee Jones), wife of the Hon Kenelm Michael Cornwall-Legh (b 12 Apr, 1978), scion of the Barons Grey of Codnor, gave birth to a dau, Beatrix Storm, 27 December, 2016.

Kenelm Cornwall Legh is the 2nd son of the 6th Baron Grey of Codnor, DL (b 14 May, 1936), (Peerage of England cr 1397), of High Legh House, Knutsford, Cheshire, by his wife the former Joanna Storm Cayley (b 1947), scion of the Cayley Baronets (cr 1661).

Victoria Cornwall Legh is the eldest daughter of Mr & Mrs Howard Jones, of Foxton, Cambridge.

Vivien Eleanor Pleydell-Bouverie 1940-2016

_. Vivien Eleanor Pleydell-Bouverie, who died 27 December, 2016, was the widow of Maj Simon Pleydell-Bouverie (1928-2012), a scion of the Earls of Radnor, and was a scion of the Keane baronets.

She was born 8 July, 1940, a daughter of Sir Richard Keane, 6th Baronet (1909-2010), by his wife the former Olivia Hawkshaw, and married Simon Pleydell-Bouverie, 24 Oct, 1961, by whom she had issue. Her husband died 3 September, 2012.

The service of Thanksgiving takes place at Deddington Church, Oxfordshire, 16 January, 2017.

Sir Ilay Campbell of Succoth, 7th Baronet 1927-2017

__. Sir Ilay Mark Campbell of Succoth, 7th Baronet, died at Crarae, by Inveraray, Argyll, 2 January, 2017. He was 89.

Born 29 May, 1927, succeeded his father Capt Sir George Ilay Campbell, 6th Bt, in 1967; married 1961, Matgaret Minette Rohais, only dau of James Alasdair Anderson (descended from the Earls of Halsbury), by whom he had issue, two daughters, Cecilia (b 1963), married to a MacGregor of MacGregor (eld son of the 6th Bt); and Candida (b 1964).

The baronetcy, created in 1808 (UK) now becomes extinct.

The funeral takes place on Wed 11 January, 2017, at Cumlodden Parish Church.
