Caspar Alexander Vesey Whitaker (born 2018)

_. Dr Sophie Alexandra Mary Whitaker (born 1981, nee Crichton), scion of the Earls of Erne, and wife of Harry James Ingham Whitaker (b 16 March, 1984), gave birth to a son, Caspar Alexander Vesey, 30 July, 2018, a brother for Hera Elizabeth Ingham (who was b in 2015).

Harry Whitaker is the son and heir of Sir John James Ingham (Jack) Whitaker, 4th Baronet (cr 1936) (born 23 Oct, 1952), of Babworth Hall, Retford, Nottinghamshire, by his wife the former Elizabeth Jane Ravenscroft Starke.

Dr Sophie Whitaker is a daughter Adrian David Crichton (born 1952), by his wife the former Janet (Janey) C.E. Wauchope (b 1954).

Andrew Charles John Stormonth Darling 1959-2018

_. Andrew Charles John Stormonth Darling, scion of that landed family, of Lednathie, died 25 July, 2018. He was 59.

He was born 3 April, 1959, the elder son of Capt Robin Stormonth Darling, of Balvarran, Blairgowrie, Perthshire, by his wife the former Susan Marion Clifford-Turner.

A Thanksgiving Service is to be held at St John's Wood Church, London, NW8 7NE, on Tuesday 7 August, 2018.

Jemima Olive Murray Wells (born 2018)

_. Charlotte A. Murray Wells (nee Fry), wife of James Nicholas (Jamie) Murray Wells (born 1983), gave birth to a daughter, Jemima Olive, 29 July, 2018.

Jamie Murray Wells, entrepreneur friend of the young royals, wed Charlotte Fry in 2014. Prince Harry and Princess Eugenie were among the wedding guests.

Jamie is a son of Simon Murray Wells by his wife Alison (nee Clough), and Charlotte Murray Wells is a daughter of Anthony Fry.

Lord De Mauley appointed Master of the Horse

_. Lord De Mauley, the 7th Baron, has been appointed to a senior post in the Royal Household. Thye 61 year-old peer will succeed the Lord Vestey as Master of the Horse, on Lord Vestey's retirement in January.

The appointment sees the return to the Royal Household of a member of the Ponsonby family, long associated with the Crown for generations.

Rupert Charles Ponsonby is from a line of senior respected courtiers. Sir Henry Ponsonby was Equerry to the Prince Consort and Keeper of the Privy Purse to Queen Victoria. Sir Henry's son, Frederick Ponsonby, was assistant private secretary and equerry to Queen Victoria in the closing years of her reign, and occupied the same post in the reign of Edward VII. He was Keeper of the Privy Purse and Equerry to King George V, and Treasuser also to the founder of the House of Windsor.

The De Mauley peerage was created in 1838. William, the 1st Baron, married a daughter of the 5th Earl of Shaftesbury; Charles, the 2nd Baron, married a Ponsonby cousin, daughter of the of the 4th Earl of Bessborough; the 4th Baron married a daughter of the 2nd Baron Sudeley; and the fifth Baron wed a scion of the Marquesses of Zetland.

Rupert Ponsonby succeeded his uncle, Gerald, the 6th Baron in 2002; and married later in 2002, the Hon Lucinda Royle,  a daughter of the life peer, Baron Fanshawe of Richmond. He was elected to the House of Lords as a Conservative peer in 2005.

Lord and Lady De Mauley have no children. They were last month guests of the Queen at Windsor Castle and were in the Royal procession to Royal Ascot.

Lord De Mauley is a relative, albeit distantly, of the Dukes of Cambridge and Sussex. His ancestor, the 3rd Earl of Bessborough married Lady Henrietta Spencer, daughter of the 1st Earl Spencer.

_. Lord Browne-Wilkinson, PC, who died 25 July, 2018, was a Lord of Appeal-in-Ordinary, 1991-2000.

Nicolas Christopher Henry Browne-Wilkinson was born 30 March, 1930, son of Canon A.R. Browne-Wilkinson, by his wife Molly.

Career: Judge of the High Court Chancery Div 1977-83; a Lord Justice of Appeal 1983-85; Vice-Chancellor of the Supreme Court, 1985-91, &c. Knighted in 1977 and sworn of the Privy Council, 1983.

Created a life peer in 1991 as Baron Browne-Wilkinson, of Camden, in the London Borough of Camden.

Married firstly, 1955, Ursula De Lacy Bacon (who d 1987), married 2ndly, 1990 Mrs Hilary Tuckwell. He leaves five children from his first marriage.

Lady Honor Morvyth Malet Llewellyn 1919-2018

_. The Lady Honor Llewellyn, who died 25 July, 2018, aged 98, was a scion of the Earls of Lisburne.

She was born in 1919, as Lady Honor Morvyth Malet Vaughan, the second of the three daughters of the 7th Earl of Lisburne (1892-1965), by his first wife the former Maria Isabel Regina Aspasia (died 1944), daughter of Don Julio Fermin Albert de Bittencourt, of the Chilean Diplomatic Service.

Her siblings were John, the 8th Earl (born 1918), and sisters Lady Gloria and Lady Auriel, the writer.

She married 2 January, 1943, Maj (William Herbert) Rhydian Llewellyn, MC (1919-2008), scion of the Llewellyn baronets, fourth son of Sir David Llewellyn, 1st Baronet, and uncle of the current baronet, Sir Roderic (Roddy) Llewellyn, sometime the love of the late Princess Margaret.

She leaves a son and two daughters.

The funeral takes place at Guildford Crematorium, 16 August, 2018.

Arnaud James Graham-Watson (born 2018)

_. Serena Graham-Watson, wife of Capt Florian Nicholas Graham-Watson (born 6 Dec, 1986), of the Irish Guards, scion of the Graham-Watson landed family, gave birth to a son, Arnaud James, 25 July, 2018.

Capt Graham-Watson was appointed Equerry to HRH The Duke of Cambridge, Colonel of the Irish Guards, in 2014. He is the second son of Andrew FitzJames Graham-Watson (born 1957), by his wife the former Brigitte Jeanson.

Capt Graham-Watson and the Duke of Cambridge are both of Boothby descent.

Capt Graham-Watson announced his engagement in 2014 to Dr Celia Campbell, a daughter of Robert Campbell, of Rockport, Maine, USA. I do not know whether this marriage ever took place, or know of a subsequent engagement or marriage to the abovementioned Serena.

Diana Elizabeth Shervington (nee Bradford), who died 24 July, 2018, aged 99, was a scion of the Bradford baronets, and descended from the Knights and Austens, and was a kinswoman of Jane Austen on both sides of her family. Born in 1919 daughter of Lt-Col Edward Austen Bradford, DSO (1879-1958), by his wife the former Margaret Louisa Hardy (1878-1972); married 1941, Rupert Patrick Shervington (1916-2003), by whom she had a son and two daughters.

He m 1972 (reg Q3 Hampshire) Diana E N (b 1948 reg co Durham) d of N G F NASH of Northwood, Middlesex and _ THORSSON.

Lucy Margaret Mary Birley 1960-2018

_. Lucy Birley (nee Helmore), who has died aged 58, was the former wife of the singer Bryan Ferry. Mrs Birley shot herself in an apparent suicide on holiday.

She was born Lucy Margaret Mary Helmore in 1960, daughter of Patrick Helmore, and married firstly, 26 June, 1982 (div 2003) Bryan Ferry; married secondly, 2006, Robin Marcus Birley, son of Marcus Lecky Oswald Hornby Birley, by his wife the former Lady Annabel Vane-Tempest-Stewart (later Lady Annabel Goldsmith), daughter of the 8th Marquess of Londonderry, &c.

Mrs Birley leaves issue from her first marriage, four sons, Otis, Isaac, Tara and Merlin.

Hon Teresa Mary (Tessa) Tennant 1959-2018

_ The Hon Teresa Mary (Tessa) Tennant (nee Cormack), who has died aged 59, was the chatelaine of Glen House, the Scottish seat of the eccentric and ill-starred Tennant dynasty into which she married.

Bohemian socialite Mrs Tennant was a pioneering advocate of 'green investment', and made her mark in the city of London as co-founder in 1988 of the Merlin (later Jupiter) Ecology Fund.

She was born Teresa Mary Cormack, 29 May, 1959, daughter of John McRae Cormack, AFC, by his wife the former Hon Gwendoline Rita Jean Davies (b 1929), scion of the Barons Davies (cr 1932), and married 5 January, 1983, the Hon Henry Lovell Tennant (1960-90), second son of the 3rd Baron Glenconner (1926-2010), by his wife the former Lady Anne Coke, LVO, scion of the Earls of Leicester.

Her husband, in the late 1980s, caused a scandal by announcing he was gay, and he left his wife and infant son, but died of AIDS in 1990. She married secondly, in 2007, William Staempfli.

Mrs Tennant is survived by an only son, Euan Lovell Tennant, who was born in 1983, and his heir presumptive to his cousin, the 4th Baron Glenconner.

He was born 30 March, 1931, son of Capt Christopher Gerald Gore (1903-54), by his wife the former Lady Barbara Susan Montgomerie, scion of the Earls of Eglinton & Winton; educated at Eton; was Capt, Coldstream Guards, &c; married firstly, 29 Apr 1957 (div 1969), Serena Margaret Mounsey (d 21 January, 2015), daughter of Charles Francis Ewart Mounsey; married secondly, 15 Oct, 1969, Mrs Antonia Henderson, former wife of Alan Brodie Henderson, scion of the Barons Faringdon, and daughter of Osmond McMullen.

By his first marriage, he had a son, Christopher (d 13 Aug 2015) and two daughters, Charlotte (b 1958), and Georgina (b 1962). Georgina is the Duchess of Norfolk, wife of the 18th Duke, Earl Marshal of England, Premier Duke in the peerage of England &c.

(Anne) Juliet Lygon 1937-2018

_. (Anne) Juliet Lygon, who died 23 July, 2018, aged 81, was a scion of the extinct Earls Beauchamp.

She was born 29 January, 1937, the middle daughter of Lt-Col Reginald Arthur Lygon (1904-76), by his wife the former Agnes Mary Louise Bell, and was a great-granddaughter of the 6th Earl Beauchamp (1830-91).

Her elder sister, Margaret, was wife of Michael West De Wend Fenton, and was chatelaine of one of the smallest stately homes in Britain, Ebberston Hall, near Scarborough, North Yorkshire. Her younger sister, Barbara, three times wed, married firstly, as his third wife, William Cavendish-Bentinck (1925-66), the only son of Victor Cavendish-Bentinck (1897-1990), who succeeded his brother in 1980, as 9th and last Duke of Portland.

Juliet Lygon was unmarried.

Lady Dodds (died 2018)

_. Lady Dodds, who died 21 July, 2018, aged 87, was the widow of Sir Ralph Dodds, 2nd and last Baronet.

She was the former Marion Davies, daughter of Sir Daniel Thomas Davies, KCVO (1899-1966), by his wife the former Vera Clarkson. Her father was Physician to the Household of the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth), was Physician to King George VI and Physician to His Majesty's Household, and Extra Physician to Queen Elizabeth II, 1952-66, who was knighted by the King and invested KCVO in 1951.

She married 1954, Sir Ralph Jordan Dodds, 2nd Baronet, by whom she had two daughters, Caroline and Arabella.

The Dodds baronetcy, one of the last baronetcies created in 1964, became extinct with her husband's death, 24 May, 2015.

Service of Thanksgiving will be held at St John’s Hyde Park, Hyde Park Crescent, London W2, 25 September, 2018.

The engagement was announced 18 July, 2018, between Henry Colburn, son of Mr & Mrs Anthony Colburn, of Northleach, Gloucestershire, & the Hon Harriet Emily Ashton (born 1990), eldest daughter of the 4th Baron Ashton of Hyde (born 18 July, 1958) of Broadwell Hill, Moreton-in-the-Marsh, Gloucestershire, by his wife the former Emma Louise Allinson.

Harriet's father is the fourth holder of the peerage created in 1911. The 1st Baron, as Thomas Gair Ashton, was Liberal MP for Hyde in Cheshire and later for Luton. He was a kinsman of the Luptons, from whom descends HRH The Duchess of Cambridge.

Annabelle Neilson 1969-2018

_. Annabelle Neilson, who has died aged 49, was briefly the wife of the Hon Nathaniel Philip Victor James (Nat) Rothschild (b 1971), son and heir of the 4th Baron Rothschild.

She was a cousin of the Earl of Warwick, and a fourth cousin of HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother via her descent from a Leicestershire landed gentry family.

Miss Neilson was the mannequin muse of Alexander McQueen and latterly a reality tv star. She eloped with Nat Rothschild in 1994, and the marriage ended after three years.

She was born in 1969, a daughter of Maxwell Frederick Neilson (born 1939), by his wife Sarah Beatty. Her first cousin was the 8th Earl of Warwick, who is a grandson maternally of Alfred Chester Beatty. Her mother was Elizabeth, Marquesa Campus di Santinelli.

Annabelle's grandmother was the former Elizabeth Pamela Belas, daughter of George Henry Belas (who was killed in action in 1915), by his wife Winifred Emily Burnaby (1886-1959). The late Queen Mother was a descendant of the Burnaby family, of Baggrave Hall. HM's maternal grandmother was Caroline Louisa Burnaby.

Rory Penn is a son of Christopher Arthur Penn (born 1950), of Burnham Market, Norfolk, by his wife the former Sabrina Mary Colman (b 4 Feb, 1955).

Francesca Penn is a daughter of Mr & Mrs Andrew Boys, of Fulham, London.

Rory Penn is a grandson maternally of Sir Timothy Colman, KG (b 19 Sept, 1929) by his wife the former Lady Mary Cecilia Bowes Lyon (b 30 Jan, 1932), Lady-in-Waiting to HRH Princess Alexandra, the Hon Lady Ogilvy, and a first cousin of HM Queen Elizabeth II.

Lady Mary Colman is a sister of the late 17th Earl of Strathmore & Kinghorne, aunt of the late 18th Earl, and great-aunt of the current peer.

Rory's paternal grandfather was Lt-Col Sir Eric Penn, GCVO, a senior member of the Royal Household, who in turn was a nephew of Sir Arthur Penn, stalwart courtier to HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, &c.

Future prime minister Edward Heath was the best man at her nuptials. She leaves issue, 2 sons, and was predeceased by 2 others. Her eldest son, Christopher, godson of Edward Heath, died aged 23 in 1973 while crewing on Heath's yacht, Morning Cloud, when it sank in a storm. Another son Timothy was killed in a road accident in France.

Prince Philip a godfather at 97 - to Inigo Hooper

_. The Duke of Edinburgh stood sponsor on Friday July, 13, 2018, at Romsey Abbey, Hampshire, at the christening of Inigo Hooper, the six month old son of Mr Thomas Edward Huntly Hooper [born 1979] and his wife the former Lady Alexandra Victoria Edwina Diana Knatchbull (born 5 Deccember, 1982), only surviving daughter of the 3rd Earl Mountbatten of Burma (b 8 Oct 1947), of Broadlands, Romsey, by his wife the former Penelope Meredith Eastwood (b 1953).

Inigo, born in December, 2017, is the first grandchild for Earl and Countess Mountbatten.

The infant's father is descended from the Earls of Castle Stewart.

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh attended the wedding, 25 June, 2016, at Romsey Abbey, of Lady Alexandra and Mr Hooper. The bride was given in marriage by the Prince of Wales due to the illness of the bride's father.

The Duke of Edinburgh stood as godfather to Lord Mountbatten, then Norton Knatchbull, at his christening 70 years ago.

Hon Veronica Wenefryde Nefertari Innes 1917-2018

_. The Hon Veronica Wenefryde Nefertari Innes, who has died aged 100, was a scion of the Barons Westbury.

She was born Veronica Bethell, 15 July, 1917, daughter of the Egyptologist Capt the Hon Richard Bethell (1883-1929), by his wife the former Evelyn Lucia Millicent Hutton (d 1956), and was a granddaughter of the 3rd Baron Westbury.

She was granted the precedence of a Baron's daughter, 9 July, 1930, a few months after her brother succeeded their grandfather, as 4th Baron Westbury.

She married 14 January, 1941, Lt-Col James Innes (b 1915), of the Coldstream Guards, scion of the Innes landed family, by whom she had issue.

Baron Laird 1944-2018

_. Lord Laird, life peer, died 10 July, 2018. He was 74.

He was Chairman, John Laird Public Relations Ltd - since 1976.

John Dunn Laird was born 23 April, 1944, son of Dr Norman Davidson Laird, OBE, sometime Northern Ireland MP, by his wife, Margaret.

He married in 1971, Caroline Ethel Ferguson, by whom he had a son and a daughter.

MP (Ulster Unionist), St Anne's Belfast, Northern Ireland Parliament 1970-73; Member (Ulster Unionist) West Belfast, Northern Ireland Assembly, 1973-75; a member of the Northern Ireland Constitutional Convention 1975-76; Visiting Professor of Public Relations, University of Ulster; etc.

John Laird was created a life peer in 1999 and took the title Baron Laird, of Artigarvan, in the County of Tyrone.

Obituary: Brigadier Trevor Hart Dyke


6th Baron Carrington, KG, GCMG, CH, MC, PC 1919-2018

_. Lord Carrington, KG, GCMG, CH, MC, PC, the last surviving politician to have served in the Second World War, died 9 July, 2018, aged 99. He was a peer for almost 80 years, and the last surviving politician to have served under Churchill.

Lord Carrington, Tory grandee and former Foreign Secretary, was the 6th Baron (Peerage of Ireland, 1796, and Peerage of GB, 1797); and a life peer as Baron Carington of Upton (1999).

Peter Alexander Rupert Carington was born 6 June, 1919, son of the fifth Baron and the Hon Sibyl Marion Colville (who d 1946), daughter of the 2nd Viscount Colville of Culross; and succeeded to the peerages on his father's death, 19 November, 1938.

Lord Carrington married 25 April, 1942, Iona (who died 7 June, 2009), daughter of Lt-Col Sir Francis Kennedy McClean, AFC, of Huntercombe Place, Henley-on-Thames, by whom he had issue, a son and two daughters.

In World War II he served in North West Europe in the Grenadier Guards; was Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries 1951-54; Parl Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Oct 1954-Nov 1956; High Commissioner for the UK in Australia, Nov 1956-Oct 1959; First Lord of the Admiralty 1959-63; Minister without Portfolio and Leader of the House of Lords, 1963-64; Leader of the Opposition in the House of Lords 1964-70, and again 1974-79; Secretary of State for Defence in the Heath Administration 1970-74; Secretary of State for Energy, 1974; Secretary of State for Foreign & Commonwealth Affairs, 1979-82 (resigned over the Falklands crisis).

He served as Chairman, GEC 1983-4; Secretary General of NATO 1984-88; Chairman Board of Trustees of the Victoria and Albert Museum 1983-88; was Chancellor of the University of Reading, &c.

Lord Carrington was awarded the Military Cross (1945); appointed to the Privy Council (1959); KCMG (1958); Knight of the Garter, (1985); Chancellor of the Order of the Garter from 1994; GCMG (1988).

He is succeeded in the peerages by his only son the Hon Rupert Francis John Carington, who was born 2 December, 1948, who married in 1989, Daniela, daughter of Flavio Diotallevi.

Diana, Lady Wills (1933-2018)

_. Diana, Lady Wills, who has died aged 85, was the widow of Sir John Wills, 4th Baronet (1928-98).

Her husband was the fourth baronet, of Blagdon, co Somerset, a member of the Imperial Tobacco family.

She was the former Diana Veronica Cecil (Jane) Baker, the only daughter of Douglas R.M. Baker, of The Close, Winsford, Minehead, Somerset, and married Sir John, in 1953.

Lady Wills was widowed in 1998. She leaves issue, David, Anthony, and Rupert. The eldest son is the fifth baronet.

The funeral is to be held at St Andrew's Church, Blagdon, Somerset, 26 July, 2018.

Christening of HRH Prince Louis of Cambridge

.The christening of Prince Louis of Cambridge takes place today at the Chapel Royal St James's Palace.

The infant, who was born on St George's Day, will be baptised in the names Louis Arthur Charles by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev Justin Welby.

Senior members of the Royal Family will be present at the ceremony, including the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, but not the Queen & Duke of Edinburgh.

The Duchess of Cambridge's parents, Mr & Mrs Michael Middleton, and her brother James will be present.

Traditionally royal children are baptized with water taken from the River Jordan. Louis will wear a replica of the gown worn by royal children since the early days of Queen Victoria's reign.

Prince Louis will have six godparents, usually referred to as sponsors:-

Nicholas van Cutsem, a great friend of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Nicholas is a godson of the Duchess of Kent. He married Alice Hadden-Paton, sister of Harry, the Versailles and Downton Abbey actor. Their daughter Florence van Cutsem was one of Meghan Markle's bridesmaids.

Mr Guy Pelly, another friend of the royal couple. William, Harry, with Princesses Beatrice & Eugenie attended his wedding in 2014 to Tennessee-born Lizzie Wilson.

Harry Aubrey-Fletcher (born 1982), scion of the Aubrey-Fletcher baronets. The Duke of Cambridge and the then Catherine Middleton attended his wedding in 2011 to the Hon Sarah Louise Stourton, daughter of Lord Mowbray, Segrave & Stourton.

Lady Laura Meade (born 1984), daughter of the Earl of Romney. Prince William and Prince Harry were present at her wedding in 2014 to James Meade, a friend of the princes, son of the equestrian Richard Meade.

Mrs Robert Carter (nee Hannah Gillingham) school friend of the Duchess of Cambridge. Her sister-in-law, Sophie Carter, is one of Princess Charlotte's godparents. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended Hannah's wedding to Robert Carter in 2012.

Damian Delahunty is the son of Mr Kevin Delahunty, of Stockley, Calne, Wiltshire, by his wife the former Arabella Lilian Virginia Sykes (b 1950), daughter of Sir (Mark Tatton) Richard Sykes, 7th Baronet, of Sledmere, East Yorkshire (Bt cr GB, 1783).

Peter Sacheverell Wilmot-Sitwell 1935-2018

_. Peter Wilmot-Sitwell, who has died aged 83, was head of that landed gentry family, formerly of Stainsby.

He was one of the City of London's most popular and respected dealmakers, as senior partner in the stockbroker firm Rowe & Pitman, and subsequently vice-chairman of Warburgs, the investment bank.

Peter Sacheverell Wilmot-Sitwell was born 28 March, 1935, and educated at Eton; son of Capt Robert Bradshaw Wilmot-Sitwell, CBE (1894-1946) by his wife the former Barbara Elizabeth Fisher.

He married 5 January, 1960, Clare Veronica (b 23 Sept, 1938), elder twin daughter of Ralph Hamilton Cobbold, of Fairlawn House, Tadley, near Basingstoke, scion of that landed family, by his first wife the former Norah Veronica Vandeleur Christie-Miller, scion of that landed family.

His wife served for many years as a Lady-in-Waiting to HRH The Duchess of Kent.

Peter Wilmot-Sitwell leaves issue. His elder son Alexander Sacheverell, who was born 16 Mar, 1961, is now head of the landed family.

Lord Thomas of Macclesfield was Managing Director of the Co-Operative Bank, 1988-97, and sometime Chairman, Internexus, &c.

Terence James (Terry) Thomas was born 19 Oct, 1937, son of William Emrys Thomas; married 1963, Lynda, daughter of William John Stevens; 3 sons.

Created a life peer as Baron Thomas of Macclesfield, of Prestbury, in the County of Cheshire (1997). Appointed CBE, 1997.
